Public Petition: Enact Electoral Reform and Proportional Representation in Canada on Change.org – Sign and Share here.

In light of the Trudeau’s broken promise that 2015 would be the last election under FPTP, I started this petition to hold our federal leaders accountable to following through on the changes that are needed to ensure fair representation for all Canadians.

There are a number of key issues that I feel are important, and several groups doing amazing work.

“Without question, the most dramatic change would be the Green Party representation: Under this PR scenario, the Greens would win on average 32 seats—a near ten-fold increase compared to their current projection of three or four seats. ” Link here.

I would like to add that the possibly 90-100+ seats that the NDP and Greens would get in this scenario is based on voting within a FPTP system – with all of the pressure that NDP and Green voters (myself included) get to vote Liberal and avoid a Conservative gov’t. Freed of that limitation in a PR system, their numbers would likely be dramatically higher. And yet, even now, with FPTP, numbers suggest that Greens should be getting 10x more seats than they are currently getting in the current, truly unjust sytstem.

I believe that proportional representation is a critical step towards ensuring a strong, fair democracy. I had hoped that Canada would have it already, based on events since the last election, but we aren’t there yet. Hopefully there will be change soon. 🙂

Here’s a quick visual – one slightly different way to imagine how PR looks different from FPTP – found here. Only modification I might suggest is adding in a ranked ballot for the local rep, to completely remove the strategic voting element from our election system.
